Hi
Once again I have blown my engine up rallying. (Maybe 6th time I’ve done it with varying results).
This time I made two mistakes:
1 I didn’t tighten the cam follower /tappet adjuster as much as normal and 3 of them opened up whilst still 1150km from home and all the way East across
Europe. This caused damage to the cams and a vibration which damaged various other parts in the valve train. It also jammed the adjusters so it then wasn’t possible to fix the problem at the side of the road.
2 My trusty torque wrench let me down and was no longer tightening anything sufficiently. (Just shows that there is a certificate and time limit in the box for a good reason)!
Made it half way home to the workshops of Kremer Porsche in Köln but the car was broken.
So despite thinking I was getting good at this there is significant damage to the engine and parts coming in from all across the world!
My question is this: I have to fit a new/second hand timing chain tower and cover. The shaft that holds the tensioner fits into a hole in the casing and an indent in the lid. What stops this shaft from dropping out? The old one appeared to have araldite holding it in and sealing it.
Is that how it is done?
Any information gladly received.
Many thanks. David

Re: Cam chain housing detailed questions about the set-up
I’m not too sure, but I always thought the pin was a force fit and the epoxy seals any oil leak chances.
I would expect the pin to be pressed in to a step in the casting, the cover will then trap that shaft.

Hi 63sven
the pin is pressed into the chain case and sealed from the back, how come you need to change the case, did the chain snap? what size engine have you
regards mike
