Wiper motor/switch

Coming back from a freezing cold Goodwood yesterday (not as cold as the infamous snow of 2015) it started raining. Turned on wipers, all good, At one point when turning the wipers to off, they actually sped up to rapid wipe (even with the switch off) and would not turn off. Eventually after a bit of waggling of the switch, activating the washer function etc, they did stop. This happened a couple of times. After an hour's break on the journey, the wipers seemed to be working ok.
Got home, thought i would just check them, they did a half wipe and then stopped completely. The washer activation still works but no wiping in either slow, fast or wash function. So the blades are now stuck at 12 o'clock position.
Any thoughts on simple fault finding test to switch, motor, relays, before i start on the unenviable task of getting access to all the relevant parts.
Thanks
andrew
