DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

With the ongoing inability to sort my starter so far I've decided that i would like to replace it with a high torque one.

My starter is part number 003 911 023A. When I see the high torques listed on websites as being suitable for various models including 914, they are listed as having 11 teeth compared to 9 teeth on a standard one.

Who has fitted one and what if any issues were encountered?

We have a later 3.2 Carrera starter on a Beetle which has been converted to run a 914 gearbox along with high compression Type 4 engine. Much bulkier starter, but turns over with ease

Hi Dean, Can’t guide which one you need for your 914 but I fitted a Wasp high torque starter to my 911 and it’s great. Turns the engine over so fast it pulls oil pressure before it starts!

Now that is impressive. With my car's if they have been sitting for a while I don't pump the accelerator to build oil pressure before starting. However, always takes 5-10 seconds. Nice that it happens on yours without needing to do this

Someone mentioned to me my car sounds more like a motorbike when starting, not very period correct, but so much more reassuring than the laboured churning of the original.

I've looked at the 3.2 carrera one and the wosp one. the carrera has 1.5kw power compared to the 0.8 standard vw starter. The wosp has 1.4kw.

I use a Mk4 Golf automatic starter motor (9 tooth).

Planetary geared “high torque” design. Rated at 1.8kw. Mounting bolt holes need slotting with a round file to suit but it’s located by the central boss.
