DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

After battling planning for the last 18 months or so, we have recently been given the go ahead to erect an insulated steel barn, 8m x 16m.
Normally I would’ve built one in timber, but I can’t span 8m without support or have a vaulted roof space to enable a lift.
Does anybody on here have experience of this firm, either good or bad?

I’m very near to pulling the trigger, but wary of sending a substantial deposit!!

Andrew, sry can't remember his username, is a structural engineer and had a similar shed/garage built a few years ago. I'm sure he will have some good advice

Mine ( 20m x 4m ) came from Steeltech in Ireland = market leader here- Murray seem to occupy same slot in UK?
Do they not have regional display/ sales outlets as Steeltech do here?

My original post contains a typo, it’s actually only 8m wide by 13m long, slotting nicely into a little corner of hitherho redundant land.
It’s going to be clad with 40mm insulated panels and double skinned roof lights with colour matched Roller and PA Doors.
Cost wise we’re at about £25,000+VAT, this doesn’t include the groundworks and concrete (one of my work contacts is doing this) or the erecting of the building itself which is an extra £5,000+VAT…, not to mention a power supply, mains water and drainage!
It’s an absolute minefield out there, with agricultural spec buildings not meeting Building Regs and Industrial Spec costing considerably more!
Some firms have additional charges to supply specifications for the base, architectural drawings and structural calculations.
Then there are the firms run by less than honourable folks with multiple previous appointments and a trail of insolvency!

They haven’t said so, they do however have a very good rating on Google, BUT my wife bought her dad a tablet recently based on Amazon reviews and shortly after received a letter promising a gift voucher if she left a five star review and asking her not to report what is basically a bribe, so who knows.
Hence me posting on here!!

This year I had a 18m x 8m unit put up, I got quotes from Murray and a few of the bigger companies. Most of the quotes are in the same ballpark - there are no 'bargains' - you get what you pay for. In the end I found a local contractor (Keith Stoner - formabuild.co.uk) since these big projects never go 100% smoothly. Example, deliveries do not all arrive at the same time. Sometimes they expect a telehandler, other times not. You'll have multiple crews (groundworks, surveyor/engineer, concrete, steel erectors) so you need someone to coordinate that lot. Knowing the guy is just up the road is invaluable.

Spec is as follows:

18m x 8m galv steel frame
60mm insulated rool panels (six roof lights)
40mm insulated wall panels
Over clad with horizontal timber featherboard
3m x 3m roller shutter door
1 single PA door
1 double PA door.
2 windows for 'office'
Polished concrete floor

I have a difficult site being on a slope and the access is poor. Ground works was substantial with lots of drainage issues.

It's an old farmhouse and the driveway was not designed for heavy lorries or telehandlers but it is the only access so we just had to accept it would get trashed and make it good afterwards. As I said, knowing the guy is local - literally see him in the pub - he is going to do a good job and I am quite happy to recommend him. The end result is pretty much my dream setup but I still need to partition the internals etc.

and the total cost...

£100k

I see you went hot rolled, with flush side rails. Top Job!
I have a local chap near me who was prepared to do the Portal Frames like yours. The problems then are all the extras required.
I can source the purlins, rails and cladding etc. from a local firm that I deal with.
I’d need to buy doors and pay for them costing to match.
I then need extra drawings and Structural Calculations.
All this finishes up costing me more than going through Murray, who have already provided me with drawings and calcs.
I realise there’s a space penalty using cold rolled, but the financial saving offsets this.
Our site too has restricted entry but is thankfully separate from the house through an additional gate.
We’re hoping to put euroboards down to cover the grass, but yes, I’m prepared for the mud!!
