My brakes with Carbone 5 pads have been squealing like mad, quite embarrassing, so thought I would try to ease the problem, doubt i would fix it, but worth a try for £5.

The fix is to put in place some 3M sticky backing pads as JohnM has done.

So, off with the wheels and do one caliper at a time.

All came apart well, the first time since installing them in late 2012, so 12 years ago. Pads are about 50% worn, and the leading edge chamfer I cut has gone.

Cleaned the pads, the contact surfaces in the A calipers and on one pad clean the gas escape groove with a hack saw, just the right width.

The pads were applied on a clean surface once I removed the old old coppa-slip and rust on the shims.
The pads were over size, so trimmed with a sharp razor blade, eased the pistons back in a mm or so and all done.

Repeat for the other side.

Pumped the brake pedal to close things up and to indent the 0.75mm thick £M pads to the piston/shim. This took 5 long pumps!

Took the car for a short drive round the estate.

Squeal is 95% gone, but still a hint sometimes that could be coming fron the rear calipers, so will do them next when the pads are re-ordered.

60 mins to do it all.

I was surprised how tight the caliper pads were in the calipers after 12 years, but these are quite dusty pads.

Is the piston in the right position/orientation??

Yes, the shim angle sits in the angled recessed.
The shim I have seems to be a mystery to some.
Before these tenacious pads the same set up with several different pads were all quiet in use.
I’m not sure anyone with these pads have quiet brakes.

I now have hearing aids and do I ever hear more, sounds likes these squeals!

A set of 3 M sticky sheets ordered for the rear pads.

Had a spare hour this morning, so fitted the 3M anti squeel pads to the rear M type calipers which also have the Carbone pads fitted at the same time as the fronts.

Pads were in great condition so chamfered the leading edge a good 6mm, cleaned the back face of the backing plates, on with the pads and all back together inside the hour.

Put a squirt or two of engine oil onto the rear spring plate arms to lube the nylon bushes fitted 35 years ago and still good.

Test drive after pumping the system up to firm as I pushed back the pistons a mm to ease fitting the pads.
Test drive was...
Silent.

Every squeal has gone and it seems odd after all these years of squeals, almost feels like the car does not stop as well.

Not sure how long this will last.

The 3M sheets are available on eBay and Amazon.
Don’t like using Amazon, so mine off eBay.
They come in various sizes, sizes for modern cars mainly so it is a bit of a guessing game, I struck lucky!
Bought another set I used on the front, and only needed 2 sheets for the tiny M rear calliper pads.

I’m not sure if this is a permanent fix, time will tell.

Drove the car to Shelsley Walsh hill climb yesterday.
Silent brakes there, squeak brakes back....

Oh well, worth the try.
