Replace 1970 expansion tank?

My under-nearside-wing expansion tank is split. Maybe I'm just cynical but I don't imagine this is doing much - there's air space in the tank and another vessel under the dash. What's the accepted wisdom on these - replace or just connect the two hoses together?

I know when my hose had cracked (didn't know at the time), when I brimmed the tank i got petrol leaking out by the front wheel. So it definitely does something, not sure if maybe you can put a release valve in?

Its not under any kind of stress, so I think you could clean it up and hot glue the split. I think the wisdom is, fit one if you smell petrol fumes in the garage. Not 100% sure, but I think the system should include a charcoal canister to work as intended...

I did just join the pipes together, not thinking about the routing and got a similar fuel leak problem when filling the tank. I have since added a high point in the link pipe, higher than the fill neck and now no problem. I did get rid of the seemingly empty box.

Ok thanks. Maybe I fix or replace the box then. Another job to do...
