I'm going to make a linkage rod. To cut the 5mm LHS thread can I just turn my die anti clockwise or or I need a LHS die?

You need a LHS threaded die

Reminds me of the young chap on his first day told by the 'old hands' to go to the hardware shop and buy a left-handed screwdriver

As a 16 year old first year apprentice I was given a docket to get a 'Long Wait' from the General Stores. I fell for it.
Never got me again though!

I cant seem to get the die to cut the thread on my rod I've angled the top so it will go on but no luck.

Could it be because I bgt a 5mm stainless steel rod , for strength, when I should of bgt mild steel? Doesn't seem able to cut the metal?

Stainless is a pig to cut a thread on. Just use regular mild steel rod...

You need to cut it by turning the die anti clockwise.

if your cutting ss.The rod will have to be well within tolerance of the die you are using.if your cutting a 10mm external thread, the rod has to be 10mm o/d
You can get away with alluminium or brass.SS and mild steel not so much.
If your rod is within spec, bevel the edge slightly.Use cutting oil and a lot of downward pressure.(I presume rod is vice mounted) If you cant get enough
purchase with die holder,You can clamp 2 vice grips to die handle,or holder to start off.

Get a length of mild steel rod
Stainless steel is a ba$74rd to cut a good thread on, you are more likely to ruin your LH die.

I started down this route until I realised that ‘turnbuckles’ are available in tons of lengths for a few pounds. Great for making adjustable length rose jointed linkages.
