DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

Would changing the colour make much difference to the value of a 1970 RHD 911e with a matching numbers engine? Original colour Bahia red which I'm not that fond of. At the moment bare shell in primer being rebuilt to original specification, all correct year parts.

quick answer, if a stock rebuild then IMHO yes it will effect the value slightly

If it was a hotrod build etc then colour change could actually enhance its value

I really like Aubergine.

IMHO, in today's world, matching numbers, matching wheel casting dates etc then original colour must be good for future values. If a modified car, then do what you like, but some colours are more popular than others, so maybe mindful of that unless you are going to keep it for a long time like I have, modified car, was Condor Green now pale yellow as i like yellow cars.

Aubergine (& Burgundy) look great on an early 911/912.

Personally I'd far rather have an Aubergine car than a Bahia Red one - but I'm not a stickler for originality ...

Paint it Aubergine. It may or may not be worth something different to red when you come to sell it, but considering good 2.2Es have gone from £30k to £120k to £80k in the last 10 years it’s not worth doing something you don’t like. Values and trends come and go unpredictably.

Bahia red is such a great colour when done right. Much underrated and quite rare. Almost a ‘safety’ colour to my eyes with a deep rich creamy finish.

If it matters (which it probably doesn’t to you) aubergine, which is a great colour, wasn’t available in MY70.

Yes Mike, I know Aubergine was't available for the MY70, but I think it's a great colour for a 911. I think you're correct about getting the Bahia red done right. The car is unusual in originally having a black headlining, it also has a sunroof and power windows which seems the norm for UK delivered E's.

Back to your original question,

I think originality depends on the buyer. James is right, the colour change will hurt the value a bit for some but not for all. It’s interesting that you comment the car has been rebuilt with ‘all original parts’ and yet the originality of the colour is not so important? I am in a minority on DDK that originality is all important (I’ve had too many colour changed 911’s which always gave me heartache) and I don’t think I’d buy another colour changed car. However, the majority are persuaded by a nice colour, which aubergine obviously is, and you might dip 10% for it if you sell but you have a car to drive which you like meantime. It’s a big decision because there is no going back (without great expense) once you have decided. I suppose a lot depends on how long you intend to keep it. Note that JohnM and Gary have both gone back to the original colour following restorations so it does hold some importance even if neither intend to sell. Tough choice.

RHD 70E is a rare car. I wouldn't change the colour. Why don't you paint it in Ferrari red?

It is a tough choice, I’ve previously painted my car silver… my taste has changed over the years and I appreciate the green more now.

But ultimately I’d I didn’t like the original colour then I wouldn’t have painted it back that way.

When it comes to it are you painting the car for you or the next owner?

+1 for change it to Aubergine

I'm guessing that it would hurt the value a little bit if you go non-original colour, but if you're keeping it I think it is more important to go with a colour that you love...

Also worth mentioning i think - almost every single 911/912 that I see with new paint tends to look amazing, at least in my eyes, no matter what the colour - I expect that new Bahia red paint will look amazing too....
