Hi, I am helping my daughter to look for a replacement car. She currently has a 5 door skoda fabia which she has had for ages and has basically worn out, so it's time to find a newer car for the next 10 years. So we'e looking for a 5 door hatch - skoda fabia, VW polo sized. Petrol manual, 3 or 4 years old, low mileage, smallish capacity petrol, but man enough to cruise comfortably on the motorway at 70+. Budget up to £10k. Thought I'd try the good people on here! Happy with other variants on the theme with reliability high on the list, so perhaps Honda or Toyota.

If other Ups are anything like my GTI - I would suggest one of the lower powered ones , not sure what the TSI type would have depreciated to in a few years , but I would have thought inside yr budget. Fabia hard to beat , but a change is probably "desired" by main driver ? (If not - repeat ?)

I think that the fabia is hard to beat, yes, just looking round to see what there is out there!

Another Fabia would be idea imho, bullet proof and just does everything well.
My Superb lives up to it's name and the wife's Citigo is in the same league, it is a Monte Carlo so nice trim and stuff but massively practical, a real 55/60 mpg, cheap tax and all that.

Daughter has just bought an UP GTi new, and is over the moon.

Thanks Graham. The Skoda has been good but not brilliant. Notably with leaks through the door seals and had quite a few albeit relatively minor mechanical issues, most recently central locking solenoids, before that an eye wateringly expensive ABS pump. Hence the possibility of something else.

I have very little interest in 'modern' cars so the criteria for my everyday car includes reliability, economy, practicality & comfort.

Meeting these needs is my current 5-door Seat Leon 1.2 TSI - the first petrol engined 'daily' I've had after 20+ years of diesels.

It'll happily cruise at the speed limit+ on motorways, achieves 40+mpg on urban journeys m(~50 mpg on motorways) & nothing has broken or fallen off.

I'd recommend one ...

What about something like a Kia Ceed - your budget should get you some easily only 2-3 years old with another 5 years manufactures warranty left on it?

Another good idea, I've been impressed generally with Kia and a friend has had many of them and loves them

The 7 year warranty is "attractive" , and the cars are probably quite "sensible" , but ?? a bit boring (harsh ?)

If it helps - I have now crossed 10,000 miles in the Up GTI in the last 10 months , and my real world fuel consumption is 57.2 mpg for those miles. The 90 hp version should be capable of a real 60mpg average (driven sensibly .... like what I obviously do). Keep them both for 10 years and I suspect the VW will be worth a good bit more at the end of it ?

10 year warranty on all Toyota products, even the GR Yaris, as long as the car is less than 100,000 miles and serviced at a Toyota garage..

It's a 65 plate - had it ~ 5 years & it's just coming up to 48k miles.

The thing about Toyota is what on earth is the equivalent to the 5 people, 5 door hatch? The Yaris is smaller. Hadn't realised how little I knew about Toyotas these days!

I borrowed a Kia Picanto Turbo recently. 100bhp of thrashy fun, like an UP! GTi for the brand-unbothered. It was great.

Picanto looks great, looks like the boot might be a bit titchy. Certainly good for the budget
