Thanks for the offer but I really want a genuine one rather than a replica.

If I can’t get a genuine one over the next couple of years or so, there are plenty of replica options out there to choose from including Porsche Classic, Restoration Design, Carpoint, Eckert etc.

What's the advantage of steel? Just curious because I was thinking of putting ally on mine.

Cheaper and easier to make.

A 2.4S model would originally have come with a steel engine lid as standard.

Aluminium engine lids - especially when fitted to road (as opposed to competition) models were easily dented/damaged by 'unsympathetic' handling ...

No worries Andy! I'll be interested to see what my S has on it when it gets here, as I thought some S had ally rear lids?

There is some debate but I think it is generally assumed that 1970 and 71 MY ‘S’ road models were specified from the factory with alloy lids. There are examples with steel and there are some ‘E’ and ‘T’ models from the same MY’s having alloy lids which suggests you could order what you wanted in those years. Over time some have been changed because, as Andy says, they get more easily damaged and I’m sure some owners gave up on them due to cost, availability and fragility. From MY 72 I think the factory supplied all lids in steel for all road models unless otherwise requested but I don’t think I’ve seen a car with one from new in those model years. Competition cars would probably be the exception if there were any.
That’s what I understand but there may be others who can chime in here.

As Andy said above they are fragile and I’m fed up curing the dents. Also, I used believe 72:S had an Ally lid but only the very very early ones prior to November 1971 had them.

When I bought my Ally lid from Poland in 2013 it was the same price as a new steel one from Porsche.

Ninemeister weighed both lids , 2.2 kgs for the Ally one , and 4.5 for the Steel.
