Hello,

Novice….. do I need to jack the car up or have access to ramp to remove a complete wiring loom?

Advise would be a massive help….thanks

Well... it's not a very nice job.
For the nasty bit, the fore-aft loom that runs through the tunnel, the scheme is to disconnect it from the front fuse boxes and instruments etc, and pull it through from the rear.
To get access to the loom at the rear where it exits the tunnel, sufficient to grip it to pull it through, is not easy. I've never done it with an engine / gearbox in. I suppose it might be possible, but the access is not great. If trying with engine in, the car will need to be up in the air so you can access the place where the loom exits the tunnel. One thing that makes it difficult is that the loom follows a tight and convoluted path up into the engine bay (via a tight gap between the torque tube and bulkhead.
If you are buying a new loom hence this one is scrap, I imagine you can save yourself lots of time by cutting it, probably by accessing it through the gear linkage adjustment hatch. (I refurbed mine, so am speculating).

One other tip: try to leave a cord in the tunnel, for later cable pulling purposes. Attach some strong cord to the front end of the loom, so the cord is pulled through when you pull the loom out. Goal is to leave the cord in place in the tunnel, with plenty of extra sticking out front and rear. Later you will use the cord to pull the new / refurbed loom into place.

Thanks for the reply, think I will leave it to the guys doing the body to pull it out when the engine is removed. I’m debating whether to using the original loom and having it refurbed and tested. Got a quote from kroon a while back. Need to think about it.

Hi Lee....I am restoring my '69 loom and am short of some parts.....if you are replacing with new, I would be interested in the remnants of your old...but maybe Kroon want those bits anyway - just a thought..

You need to bear in mind that the 69 loom is one year only and has some
plugs/sockets that are mounted to a bracket on the rear shock absorber
crossmember, in the engine compartment.
I enquired with Kroon years ago and they told me that I would need to supply
them with those plugs/sockets so they could re use them.

That’s correct. I cannot give my loom to anyone as it will be used.
Will probably have to use kroon.

Someone told me to try vintage wire man who would work with what I’ve got but he quoted £1500 and for another £1000 could simply get a new one. He’s worked on other early porsches.

Don’t see any other options to be honest.

Complete rebuilt loom for SC, apart from engine loom.All superflous wiring removed,(lighter, windows etc) Cost was about £1600,from this guy on Pelican

Lee.Hes been making looms for Pelicanites for years.Pretty sure he will be able to do anything you need.Plus about 40% less than Kroon.

Ok that’s good to know, I’m hoping my car will be in the body shop in 1st quarter of new year.

I purchased a loom from Kroon. Expensive but they are perfectly manufactured and are extremely authentic with the correct plugs.
