Intermittent indicators on 1970 911T - common fault?

Indicators seem to come on intermittently - rarely they flash, mostly they come on once and disappear. Sometimes both left and right indicators on the dash light up and flash together. One assumes it's the relay, but the hazards come straight on and work perfectly. I assume hazards use the same relay as the indicators, so maybe this points to the stalk/switch on the steering column. I jsut wondered if this is a fault others are aware of, and what its cause is?

Thanks. Sounds particularly likely since following me on the motorway Chris68 suggests indicators and sidelights in the same assembly may have been alternating.

Yes, bad earth.
Mine used to do that, just the earth continuity.
