Hi All,

Just wondering of any views on paint types. Have been doing my 71 S as close to original as I can within reason and I am ending up doing a complete respray because of a few paint issues I have and dings I put in it over the years it has been waiting to be finished.

Anyway onto paint types and colours. Its signal orange, but there is the question of using a modern paint with laquer or a solid colour. The modern paint is undoubtedly more shiny and easy to maintain and repair if required but wanted to know peoples view. Would you use base and laquer or is 2K RM paint (I think what Glasurit are now part of) the best option as the closest to original?

Not sure what you mean by "closest to the original" The chemical composition of paint has changed significantly since your car was built.
Porsche used three different paint suppliers with the oft quoted Glasurit being one of them. From memory the other two were Lesonal and Herberts but stand to be corrected. I had my 1970 car painted seven or so years ago and it still looks excellent. It's a modern two pack paint: Nexa 420 a two pack single stage paint ( not clear coat). However, the car was bare metalled as painting over existing paint can be problematic with disappointing issues down the line.
Yes modern paint can look a bit too shiny but some of this depends on the end polishing. If you want something akin to the original paint finish you need to get the 'orange peel look' rather than something nice and smooth.

That’s what I’d say too. Clear over looks wrong on an old car, no matter how you apply it the look is somehow thinner and wetter.

Thanks, that was what I was going towards, but as ever the paint shops are always keen on the base and clear coat as that is what they are used to.
