There's a screw at one end which allows me to free one end and then lever it, but it's going to break rather than come off. That screw is only accessible because the black granite-like material which runs along the middle appears to have shrunk to reveal it. If there were further screws in the same position but further along, they would be behind the black granite but there's no getting to them. One end does appear to split, so maybe there's a way of splitting it?

I'm trying to keep much of the car original if possible, so it'd be a shame to destroy the trim when the chrome is in such good condition.

You need to prise the rubber out to gain access to the fixings.
If the rubber has perished you will probably end up damaging it when you remove it.

The "rubber" is like black oak (and about a foot shorter than it started out!) I could cut the rubber I guess. Is it possible to get new Rubber to go in the chrome?

Try warming the 'rubber' with a hot air gun to soften it - you should then be able to pull it out of the aluminium trim.

New rubbers certainly used to be available from places like Roger Bray - worth checking the price at your local OPC too.

Thanks for all your help. A bit of heat enabled the hardened rubber to be extracted without damaging the chrome, and sure enough more screws were revealed.
