What’s going on here, then?

https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/por ... crest-sign

A not particularly attractive light-up sign for £12k that could probably be commissioned and made for something usefully under £1000, or under £100 if you get those talented Chinese slave kids on the case.

What am I missing?

If it were an original dealer sign I could understand the appeal.

Am I being naive? Is there some sort of obvious scam here that I’m too gentle and honest to see?

Eh!!!

Reminds me of a charity auction I was at years ago.

There was a framed signed football shirt and a couple of tipsy gents got into a bit of a bidding ding-dong. The price got a bit out of hand and eventually the hammer fell and one took the hollow victory.

The auctioneer then announced the next lot was a second identical framed football shirt so the second placed bidder was getting that for their final bid

Ouch!

Easy DIY that for a 100th of the price.

After 2min of poking around on the internet it looks like these guys...

TBH they've not mis-sold anything as they're clearly replica's... its the buyers that are questionable  more money than sense.

There seems to be a few businesses churning out stuff like this (including fairly tacky 'artwork') to go with the classic / specialist cars auctions. Just take a look at the regulars who submit into Silverstone Auctions. There's obviously enough daft and wealthy people to support it!

my favourite are traffic lights rewired for indoor use. You can get them on ebay for £50-100, at a physical auction they seem to sell for £300+
