Headlights

Was out last night, car is LHD, with LHD H1 EU lamps.

The low beams have been adjusted to a flat beam, and I'm running them through H4 RHD glass.

Lighting isn't all that good, are there any suggestions as to what I can do to improve forward vision?

Could be very wrong here, but I think the wire sizes used on these early cars won't take a big hike in current draw, stand to be corrected.

I think my bulbs are old Halford upgrades from 20 years aback, 'blue light' for better fog penetration etc, still rubbish, but don't drive it after dusk.

My thoughts exactly, but was out last night with another group and came home when it was past dusk.

I have never really bothered too much about the quality of the lighting on my Targa, it hardly sees daylight let alone darkness (thought I would get that in before 911Hillclimber comments). I did fit some uprate bulbs many years ago.

However, on my rally car, mainly through concerns about stressing the Main / Dip Beam contacts in the steering column stalk (a known weakness and expensive to fix) I wired both the Main and Dip Beam feeds via relays and I can honestly say I was totally surprised by the lighting improvement. I would highly recommend doing this as a first cheap fix towards improved lighting and as a bonus save your Main / Dipped Beam Switch from failing. The Headlamps are fitted with Osram Nightbeakers - I think.
