tried the Pelican forum suggestion of a tie wrap through the central hole but it appears that you still cannot tension the spring. Suggestion also to compress the spring until the 2 arms are nearly touching then tie with wire...problem is you cannot get snips inside to release wire...any suggestions would be welcome thank you .

Problem now solved with compressing the 2 spring arms in a vise then a tie wrap , assemble then cut tie...sorted.
