OT: boring Motorhome insurance
Are there any motorhomers on here? I'm new to it and need to insure one and wondered if there were any recommendations?

Re: OT: boring Motorhome insurance
Hi Graham
I use Comfort Insurance, and they have always been super competitive. They are a specialist broker, no claims experience (thankfully), but had 3 mid term adjustments as changed motorhomes several (well 3 obvs!) whilst with them.
HTH, welcome to the club!
Cheers

BTW, make sure you are plated for your actual weight inc towing etc. Most now are built to 3.5t because young-uns don’t have C1 licences. In most cases this means you are overladen at the end of your drive, which is not good. I plated ours up recently to 4.4t plus an extra 2t towing, so can essentially never be overweight. PM me if you need any help and I will talk you through it. Plating up did not affect the insurance incidentally.

Thanks Wayne, that's very helpful. It comes with a 3650kg weight, but would be interested in going higher to make sure we are ok. I'll contact Comfort to get a quote.

Re: OT: boring Motorhome insurance
We have insured ours through the Caravan and Motorhome Club for the last few years, and they have been very competitive. I’ll second Wayne’s comments about weights, our previous 3.5 tonne Hymer was 3.560 loaded, before we 3 adults got in ………… Plus I’ve just had to go through a medical and eye test to retain my C1/D1 licence to drive up to 7.5 tonnes, just because my age now begins with a 7!

Re: OT: boring Motorhome insurance
No worries. Our last one was 3850 which gave us 850 pay load, but 100kg for water, same for fuel, 200 for the young family and 450kg for everything else inc gas bottles, tow bar, fixed stuff like TVS, it was marginal, being optimistic! Our new one has a big garage which of course you use, and whilst we were ok overall (just) we’re overloaded on the rear axle, so I added air suspension to the rear and had the plating adjusted to suit. It is a funny business, 80% of motorhomes are overweight for these reasons but when towing etc, you stand out more than most so need to be right. On the old one I figured I would drop all possible fluids if challenged, and might make it, but it is not a great place to be.gridgway wrote:Thanks Wayne, that's very helpful. Also, Comfort do recovery add-on cover inc Europe, as we make ours pay the bills on summer holiday duty. FWIW, the AA do not recover or attend roadside anything over 3.5t, so you need separate cover. Bizarrely, the AA provide the cover for the Comfort add-on, but it is obviously a distinctly negotiated cover with them, not available to the masses, so check that also.

Re: OT: boring Motorhome insurance
I use specialist broker Grove & Dean, but the insurer is Highway Insurance. Was curious to find out how much they are charging me at the moment - its £200 per year incl. breakdown...

Windscreen cover is important as well.
Check that any insurance has enough cover, some windscreens cost nearly 2K.
