Not a good morning.

Thank god I had the fire extinguisher in the car or you would be looking at a total right off. Dug the old girl out and she was smoking more than normal - was warming it up doing usual checks of fuel lines etc and saw flames! Jesus Christ that got the adrenaline going I can tell you. 30 seconds more I think the whole thing would have gone up. I think it was build up of oil on the exchangers over winter (first start up in a few months) pretty sure not fuel lines as fire coming from the back right hand side. Hagerty (Hiscox) sending an inspector...thoughts an advice on next steps would be appreciated. Need a stiff drink!

That is absolutely terrifying Will. Fire is everyone’s worst nightmare. Great you caught it and saved a write-off.
Did you have to change your underwear?

Not good Will !! Hopefully just require a clean up ? Or so there anything damaged ?

I do the same as you, every time I start the car from cold I pop the hood and check everywhere for fuel leaks ( twice in 18 years I’ve discovered fuel leaks from rubber hoses)

Very scary.

I have also experienced fuel leaks (twice in 30 years) but I do always check around and under the engine and beneath the front end immediately after start up when they have been stood for a while but not generally on every cold start up – it will be my new policy to check every time and have the extinguisher (always keep one by the workbench) in my hand when I do so.

Thanks gents - it was booked in for a service with Angus at Greatworth next Friday so I'm hoping the insurance company is happy for it to still go there. Inspector coming on Weds so find out more then. Don't think there's much damage, but want to get to the source of the problem obviously. The eagle eyed will see a child seat in the back there Maybe fuel was involved although lines are all pretty new. Bloody scary, but pleased I had the extinguisher at hand. Surprised insurance companies don't make it mandatory!

Wow, scary Will. So glad you caught it. It proves how careful we have to be. New fuel line don’t seem to be any guarantee of integrity.
I hope it works out ok.

Very scary. I have to admit I never check the engine. Need to change my habits. And buy a fire extinguisher.

It would be interesting to know what caused the fire if you are able to find out.
