Steering wheel column wobble

Probably been covered before but couldn’t find anything specific for a 1970 911 but only 74 on,they seem to show a sleeve you tap in to stop the steering rattle/wobble is this the same for my year or is it a different part?

The first thing to check is that you have the spring & 'collar' on the back of the steering wheel & that the 'collar' is the correct way round.
In my experience, most of the problems with play at the steering wheel are due to missing (or incorrect orientation of) this 'collar' - you can see it on top o fthe spring in this picture:

Cheers Andy I do have the spring with the collar but even with it on the splined column still wobbles,I always thought there was an easy fix with this

It is 31 years ago for me and my 73 911 but I'm sure there is a plain plastic bush that goes in the top, you knock the old one into the column and insert the new on top of it. I'll see if I can find a pic/supplier.
Type 911 sell one for the 74 on, but I think they are the same. expensive mind at £22 + vat etc, part # 2088.
It would be worth a call to them first.

Yeah I bought the metal one but now see it’s 74 on and I see the plastic one too,design 911 sell them as well from Rennline

Ok so none of those tap in solutions work,I’m guessing remove the column? Still don’t know what bearing to buy

Do these help? Straight out of the Haynes manual and they are of the early columns.

Bespoke bearing of course...
I suspect the bearing in the op's car has lost its balls which should be trapped in the two steel sleeves staged over to trap them
To the op..
Have you said the wheel has the ring and spring fitted as per Andy's post and that the collar is free to move?
The spring and collar are pushed into the bearing to close all the clearances and get the balls to become a precise ball race
I think I would get the bearing out and see if it has all its balls present. If not, you cam buy new balls very cheaply off eBay. They are used all over push bikes, even Halfords may have them.
Worth a go at a potential bill of £200.

Yes, mine is like that without the wheel on.
The wheel hub centralises and clamps the bearing race tight using the spring and the collar so compressing the bearing assembly. This then will remove the lateral play considerably if not totally.
Thus your wheel needs the right hub, the spring and the collar.
The collar needs to be free to move under the force of the spring being compressed as the hub is locked down tight by the big wheel nut in the hub.
I would doubt the bearing is worn or collapsed, but it must have a compete number of balls in place and be greased.
Can you get it out as per the manual picture I posted?
