Drum brake Springs

None Porsche. I decided to change the brake shoes on the family car. Battled for over an hour to get the top spring back on. Failed. Any tips? Could I warm it up a little?

If your struggling using pliers etc try a proper tool

Could you not fit the top first with the shoes ? ... assume the adjuster star is at the bottom ?

.
Take the (helical) brake shoe hold-down springs off.
Disengage the top of the brake shoes from the wheel cylinder.
Attach the return spring to the 2 brake shoes.
Lever the ends of the brake shoes back into the wheel cylinder.
Refit the hold-down springs & pins.

I do the same as Andy, but ...
I replace the hold downs with panhead screws that I massage quite a bit with a grinder to make them slim so they fit into the brake shoe + grind a slot in the end. Then it's easy peasy to mount them with a screw driver, it works on the first try every time
