Cam Sprocket shims

I've check the alignment on the right hand side sprocket. 4 shims under it like when I removed it. All measures within spec.
The left hand sprocket was removed before I acquired the engine. The shims were missing. It requires 6 shims to put it within spec. Does this sound correct? What is the maximum amount of shims you can use?
