Who do we use for engine rebuilds now?

My 964 motor has never been apart. It’s fine, but leaks a bit from places that can only be cured by taking it to bits. This would no doubt lead on to new B&Ps, head refurbishment etc.

Who’s best to use nowadays? I feel like the old guard - Bainbridge, Fulljames et al are no longer mentioned much.

I’d just want it back together as stock.

For some reason I didn’t think Mike was still working. I wonder if it’s legal to go so far for this sort of thing at the mo. Mrs Sam’s family are up the road from Mike and I’m really missing my usual snowy winter runs over the fells.

Probably not in the spirit of the lockdown. :(

Thanks for the info on Greatworth too, I’ll drop Angus a line.

+2 for Greatworth. They are/have built engines for Theon (or someone like that)

Hi Sam
Yes, Mike Bainbridge is still working (not even my 550 rep could stop him;-) so it's another +1 from me!

All the best
Ian.

I have experienced Mike Bainbridge several times and cannot fault the man and how he operates.
Used to love those Lake trips to deliver and collect.
His brother Neil in the south midlands does strong engine work too, even had a dyno to test them.

I, like others, have seen Greatworth's engine room, and that looks really good too.

I might add that a 'name' used to do a box or an engine adds value to the final item.
Also, it is key the engine builder has a good machine shop to back him up, and MB does.

There are many who are capable, many old names still around, Autofarm etc, but with Mike you get him and nobody else working on the engine; worth a lot imho.

AMS do a lot of 964s and seem to receive decent reviews. They run a 964RS I think.

That's Angus Archer, 20yr plus friend and we (he!) built my 964 engine.

Yes, runs his Uncle's 964 RS, owns an early 911 himself. Top man, super talented, don't be put off by the 30 watercooled cars in the yard, his heart is in the air-cooled stuff and Astons.

And they run a stepfront Alfa racer....and not too far from Cambridge - so could be a good choice!

Have been impressed by MLR Marc and his lads do a great job but are based in Staffordshire so some way from Cambridge.

Steve Winter at JAZ is building an engine for me at present and came with a good recommendation, based in St Albans.

Tuthills know their way around a 911 engine - definitely worth talking to them.

Another thumbs up for Mike Bainbridge, he's just done a full rebuild on my Targas 3.0SC motor and gearbox last year.
Not the quickest by any means but at least you know it's been done correctly.
I wish I could download Mikes knowledge on Aircooled engines and gearboxes.
