Hi,

I've rebuilt the tensioners and fitted safety collars on my 2.0 engine but would really like to do the pressure fed tensioner upgrade. However, the available kits look to be for later engine chain housings, having more cover studs than on my early engine.

Does anyone know, can the hydraulic tensioners be fitted to my engine (with some machining to chain housing covers) or do I have to change the chain housings too?

I believe they will fit but you should consider the 930 tensioner which I believe are a better solution. I'm sure others will chip in.

Think it's the 930 type tensioners that are already in there. The ones with the oil bleed screw.

The tensioners I've got are part 901.105.519.0R. So don't look to be the 930 type??

Chris, there is a good guide to installing the late style chain tensioners in Wayne Dempsey's 101 projects for your 911. There's too much text for me to type out this morning and I'm not near a printer/scanner.

It does say the kit will fit cars from '69 to '83.

"Engines from '65 and '66 cannot use the bolt in upgrade because the cam tower lines attach differently. If you rebuild your early '65/'66 engine and use the late-style chain housing and cover, you can then use the newer chain tensioners. Engines from the '67 year can also use this method to install the upgrade."

There's a full description of the install with photos , the only other mention of the earlier engine is towards the end....

"Engines from '67 - '72 require the removal of the two upper studs on the left chain housing cover and replacement with two longer studs (M 8X60)"

Many thanks for the information and offer to share info from Wayne Dempsey's 101 projects book. I'd forgotten I owned a copy of Wayne's How to Rebuild and Modify Porsche 911 Engines, and it also advises swopping the chain housings on '65 to '67 cars in order to use the pressure fed tensioner kit. I was hoping not to have to do that. Mine is an early aluminium engine case and so falls into this category.

If there isn't a method for utilising the existing housings and covers I'm leaning towards sticking with my rebuilt tensioners and safety collars.

stick with what you've got. Lots of opinions on the subject, but after talking to some well known engine builders on the pros & cons + other research , on my 2.4S build I opted for stock style tensioners rebuilt and then the plan was to fit the safety collars ( which 10 years later I still havent done ) .

I've got a spare pair of safety collars if you need - ordered two pairs by accident. Yours for £20 incl postage.
