Anybody here know how to use the 289d tool on a 716 gearbox?

There is no information in the manual with this tool

the tool 289 is for the 911, 912 and 930 , the tool you should need is on page P72 and tool No' P53, Photo on the page, (Fig134)

I looked in my factory 356A workshop manual and the 356A supplement manual for tool P53.

The supplement manual details the 716 gearbox but as mentioned before the only real difference to 644 version is the syncromesh improvements and therefore although this is well explained there are no special tools advised you would be using 644 tools.
So in the dis-assembly and assembly of the transmission section for the 644 they show P53. This is to raise and hold up the radius arms when fitting the transmission and shock absorbers. Looks a bit like like the jack used for raising the car. To raise those arms I have a scissor jack with a slot in it to locate into the width of the arm. Not as good as the correct Porsche one but worked for me. So this tool is just an aid to get the box out as I seen it.

For your info they list many tools most VW to use on the Gearbox work. They advise that a stand VW 308 to mount it on and then Porsche tools P37,P46, P53 VW118, 222, 228, 246, 209b,291b, 400,401,408,409,415,433,and 438.

Some of these tools are sockets some are complicated items

Have you got the box out? Was P53 correct to your thoughts? Where are you on this work? As I mentioned before this is not easy work to do much of it involves determining wear ( somewhat easier if parts are broken !) You did determine the selector movement was okay? and was the magnetic oil drain plug clean with no metal swarf on it?

Maybe I am off track on this P53 tool which was posted on the previous thread to this one?

You can use the 289d as well. I also use it to measure the diff spacers. You need an exact measurement of the tool first. P33 is the tool in the factory manual.

Not sure how P72 and P53 can be used for pinion and gear setting?
In my 356A manual they only talk about a P33 tool, but these are impossible to find.

An alternative for this P33 tool can be a VW289d tool.....but to use this i need the manual for "how to use" and interpret the measured values
Normally the VW manual talks about this tool... but till this moment I had no luck in finding this manual
