My odometer stopped working quite a while ago ... so lockdown seemed a good time to have a look at it .

Anyway, I was assuming it would be something obvious like a plastic gear stripped ... but as it is all the gears and worms are fine .

What I have noticed is the silver steel gear on the end of the odometer barrels spins freely on its shaft ... so this appears to be where it’s failed. I can rotate it and it clicks the numbers over but is turns independent of its drive shaft.

Before I rip it all apart and cause damage ... anyone know how this part locks to its shaft ?

It’s a friction fit on the shaft. If you get the gear off you can rough up the shaft with some pliers and add a drop of Loctite. Worked for me!

All my drive gears are brass / alloy ... wonder if they’ve previously been changed from the plastic

This was from my ’74 Carrera - brass and cast alloy gears, too.

Roughed up my shaft ... and it’s now working . Nice easy fix
