this is an odd one, i have been offered a RHD 1968 911L. The car is stripped and has the front and rear wings removed, the structure is solid, with good floors etc, but has some patch welding on the inner wings, front and rear.. It is in a workshop with a number of other old cars, lotus, Maserati etc mostly in various stages of restoration. The car is mostly complete, with an engine (i am told 2.0L on Weber carbs). There is a gearbox, which is dismantled and boxes of parts, seats, instruments etc.
I spent a few hours looking at the parts and as far as I can tell most of the parts are there, a set of 15 inch fuchs wheels, doors, wings, glass (no rear screen), opening rear 1/4 windows, etc etc.. most of the parts are not perfect and could do with some refurbishment, replacing.
The engine ran when parked, (number *911 931* is this a valid number?) but I would assume needs a rebuild as it has been parked. The owner has no real idea of value and I am struggling. I am really into 964 and 993s and know them and the costs/ values really well, but the F series cars are an unknown to me, but have a hankering for an early car... i can see that i could easily end up putting £75,000-100,000 into this project to get it nice.. is it worth considering or should I run? From what I have said, what is a fair offer?
It looks like a solid starting point that could be a shell without too much work, but i am sure that finding trim, linkages, building doors from random unmarked boxes could be a big job..

You know the man maths... end value minus resto cost is the max you should bid.
You also probably know that if you do the sums honestly, since your resto cost is indeed 75K+, your bid will be very very low. If you do the maths really honestly, and use professionals for the work, your bid will be negative!
Meaning that you will fudge the man maths, and will inevitably lose money. Ask me how I know....

So only do it if you fancy the project, have a hankering for the finished car, can afford it, and are not doing it as a money making scheme. Enjoy it. Simple!

I don't know where you got that engine number from but it bears no resemblance to format used for 2.0 911 engines.

There were 4 different engines used in the 1968 911L:

- engine type no. 901/06 with serial no. in the format 308 XXXX fitted to ROW 911L models

- engine type no. 901/07 with serial no. in the format 318 XXXX fitted to ROW 911L Sportomatic

- engine type no. 901/14 with serial no. in the format 328 XXXX fitted to USA 911L models

- engine type no. 901/17 with serial no. in the format 338 XXXX fitted to USA 911L Sportomatic

I would also say that you need to be very careful when buying a car that has been dismantled by someone else - even more so if it was done a number of years ago - as it's easy to spot if major items are still present but there are 1000's of smaller components (including specific fasteners, brackets, clips, etc) that could be missing ...

Richard is spot on as far as I can see. Only take on this kind of project if you want the challenge, have the skills and pretty deep pockets.

On the other hand only a few RHD 911L were made of this a rare one-year-only model which had an interesting spec. Ian McLeod may be able to tell us how many if he is still around.
All '68 cars were a bit one-off so missing parts may be extra difficult to find.

Agree. Very interesting car, so probably a very worthwhile project. Unless "worthwhile"="profitable"!

Yep. Luckily those little bits are all laughably inexpensive to buy

What colour is the car.? I may have some information on it.

I agree, that the car is worth when finished £75-£100k and the higher end can only be achieved if all the original parts are there esp interior, doesn't matter what condition and most items can be restored. Alos most importantly will be the standard of restoration - again cutting corners or trying to save money only reduces the overall end value. In trying to value the car I use the same maths - final value less restoration, I then cross check this with what value the car is worth if sold as parts.

I know that some cases were replaced and then re-stamped..i have attached an image of the stamping on the fan support of the crankcase.. any ideas please ?

Hi there is is currently painted burgundy red and has a plate on the a post with the code 6808-1 which seems correct?

I have decoded the VIN and the first 4 digits are 1181 XXXX this seems to show that it is a 911, 1968, T Coupe, and not an L as the owner had told me. Thanks for all your help. I have some thinking to do. As you all say it is is a one year only model and with boxes and boxes of parts it could become a nightmare. I found 3 of some parts, the owner gave me an alfa gear lever and was sure that it was from this car.. I am really at a loss about putting a value on it.. the engine with weber carbs must have some value, but is an unknown.. The owner is a super chap and i want to be fair.. I am starting to think that this may not be for me, i did offer to help the owner sell if i don't want it and assume that it would make more than it is realistically worth to me if we hung the panels on, got it rolling and listed it on ebay.. The owner is keen to know that it will not be broken.
I have a few weeks to think about it..
