Doesn't want to move. I have the car in 4th. I can't get the long bar on it as the lid is in the way. I'm soaking it will in oil. Any ideas? The are only meant to be torqued to 43ft

Why are you trying to take it off, has the seal gone behind?

Have you got a normal socket ’T’ bar and a short length of scaffold pole to miss the lid.

If you are determined to get it off, you may have to take the lid off, to get some purchase on a longer bar if its been torqued up too high.

I had a very good go at getting mine off. Started off with a big spanner, then a big spanner with heat, then more heat, then I borrowed a flogging spanner attached to a large lever with a pivot, from a mate with a garage. Apparently they use that to get BMW engine sprockets off when changing cam belts. Still wouldn't budge. Even after hitting it with very big things.

At that point, I gave in, and took the engine out. It was the work of 2 minutes to get at it with an electric impact wrench, which moved it no problem.

Then I found that my pulley had a hairline crack at a corner of the keyway!!!

New (second hand from PRS) one was fitted after the engine rebuild that was needed anyway, but 7k miles or so later, that was leaking because there was a wear ridge on the pulley. I'm fitting a speedy sleeve this time around, so we will see how things go with that When you put it back on, the washer under the bolt benefits from a smear of jointing compound.

There's no need whatsoever to tighten things up to way over the torque spec in the book.

If in doubt, take the engine out.

Whist you wait for the postman why not try the Al Zim method.

Place the socket on the bolt, place a piece of 4 x 2 wood on the tinwear to the RHS of the pulley.

Rest the socket handle, wrapped in a towel, on the piece of 4 x 2, disconnect the coil wire and crank the engine over.

Eh Voila !

Nut of got a universal pulley holder. Now how do so get the pulley off. Not sure if I should use my bearing removing tool as it will push against the crank?

Careful, be very careful. When you get the pulley free, see if there is a crack in the corner of the keyway.
