I am intending to refinish a set of ‘73 Cookies to bring my ‘73T back to vanilla.

Going to do a test run with a ‘74 wheel which is not as valuable. Just wondering if anyone has an unrestored early cookie or has done this?

My primary question is the smoothness of the finish. I have a ‘72 Cookie which has been lightly painted but still has a pretty uniformly ‘rough’ surface, certainly when compared with even the more roughened parts of a Fuchs. I’m thinking this is the original finish. Any other Cookies I have have been painted to the extent that they are smooth.

There is an anodising firm not far from me. My understanding is that I need to get the wheel vapour blasted to remove all trace of paint, then the anodiser will remove existing anodising and reanodize. Up to me how much, if any, surface prep is done before reanodizing.

I'm fairly sure that Cookie Cutters were not anodised - in fact I seem to remember reading (years ago) that the particular alloy that they are made from can't be anodised.

Incidentally they were cast (as opposed to Fuchs which were forged) &, as a consequence, had a 'rough' finish.

Ah, OK. I do recall a heavy plastic coating on a set I had some years ago so I guess they are painted and lacquered.

Just came across this thread while looking for anodising firm for my screen trims...

Thought I would add something here that I came across only recently when I was cleaning up some old cookies that I have in storage, which 'look' like they are anodised.

The material composition is stamped on the back is AlSi12Mg, which is a pretty common aluminium alloy apparently.

This is also known as ISO AlSi12, EN AC44200 (AlSi12Mg(a) and EN AC44100 (AlSi12Mg(b), CL 31AL and DIN EN 1706. For complicated, thin-wall, pressure-tight castings subject to fatigue loading. Good elongation and good corrosion resistance.

A quick look to see if this composition can be anodised shows as.. UNSUITABLE, as someone else suggested.
