Does anyone have any tips for installing this style of early 911 gearknob (black plastic with the 5 speed shift layout on top)?

Thanks Andy. I conclude....glue. Because the crush sleeve is new and seems to fit as it should it just doesn't grip the stick.

I recently installed one using the official Porsche crush sleeve (3 times the price of the non OEM and probably no different). Had to use a rubber mallet in the end to get the shifter to slide inside the clamp, but once it got hold, it’s not going anywhere. I wouldn’t glue it. There are some YouTube vids.

I'm not sure about 911s, but I have just put a new wooden 917 style gearknob onto my 356. There is a 16mm metric fine thread on the gearshift lever, which the thread on the gearknob goes onto. You need to procure a locknut to firmly fix the gearknob to maintain the gear numbers on the shift knob in the correct orientation. I ended up buying a number of different diameter nuts till I ended up with the correct size and thread pitch.
