Chrome stripping / powder coating

Post by Ralph »

I had a chrome steel wheel which I was going to get powder coated to use as the spare for my 911. The powdercoater had previously told me to get the chrome stripped first as it doesn't blast off too well. I dropped the wheel off at a local chrome plater who was going to hydrochloric acid dip and strip the chrome. What I got back was this:

This still has the copper plating - the initial stage of triple chrome. The blaster/powdercoater now wants this removed too.

Anyone with any experience of triple chrome removal?

Cheers,

It's not what you asked but I've had several original chrome steel wheels blasted/powder-coated in the past ...

Perhaps I have an overly fussy powder coater?

Surely the copper plating is soft and easily blasted?

I think that before I go down the route of copper stripping with another plater I will try an alternative powder-coater.

The powder-coater was concerned that the copper would peel around any edges of patches of corrosion and you would see steps in the finish.

As it's only going to be the spare I can live with a less than perfect finish.

Any powder-coating recommendations in the East Surrey / West Sussex area?

Thanks Nick, I thought that you would recommend Chris at Foremost. He's done all of my other powder-coating to a good standard but unfortunately I think that he has a bit of a wheel phobia as he says that they always go wrong. I have some other stuff with him now but he didn't want me to leave the wheel.

MIGS in Newdigate did come up too when I was searching around and they had good reviews but I ended up trying Powder Coating Shop in Charlwood as he is very near my work. It was turned round in 3 days at a cost of £80. He didn't have a problem with the plating and only the corroded areas look a little uneven.
