DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

Hi All,

I know several of you dabble in the more modern end of the 911 spectrum. I am looking to get back into using a 911 as more of a daily driver. I used to use a 993 c2 tip for many years as my main car and it served me well, getting up to 180k miles. I have become used to the comfort of my BMW535d for mile eating and the Porsches are now weekend toys, but with the advent of technology I wonder if anyone out there uses pdk 997 or 991 as daily cars and do 20ish k miles per year.

I was looking and for up to £50ish k you have a choice of 991s and 997's. I have read a lot and have driven 997 c2S and turbos and like them, but havent yet driven a 991, would probably stick to the C2s or even C2 which might be better with less harsh tyres. There doesnt seem to be much information on any massive issues with them and the 991 seems to be more of a GT car which would fit the bill.

Any thoughts?

I use my 718 as my main driver and it’s fine except that it’s so powerful, it needs four wheel drive in the wet. I’m not sure what the later 911s are like in winter conditions, but they may be a handful.

I notice is particularly when overtaking, bloody thing sits in the middle of the road with the wheels spinning or it spins them leaving faster roundabouts. I’d read somewhere that one of Porsche’s test drivers liked the Carrera 4S best for road driving and I can see why. However you can corner at a very high speed as long as you’re careful with the throttle and there isn’t surface water or leaves. Then it’s a handful.

I seem to recall some recent chat about winter tyres for the Big 911's, and now there are all year all weather tyres coming in.

I would imagine a 991 would be very useable, just a hunch.

I have had both a 997.1C2S for two years followed by a 997.C4S for four years, both manual. I tended to drive my cars for a few weeks at a time as a daily, between swapping with my more traditional diesel estate. I would say that both cars work well as a daily, although the C4S was a better all round car regardless of weather.
If you can afford the fuel, insurance, tyres and accelerated depreciation then the only real downside is their practicality of luggage space. A PDK variant would make an easier daily over a manual, especially where there is an element of city driving.

As for the 991 it is definitely more of a GT car and arguably less fun to drive than the 997. However the interior and tech does make the 997.2 look a bit old and is mainly a big improvement ( other than the electronic handbrake ).

I've been recently looking at 991.1 C2S but have yet to find anything I would consider as a big enough improvement on my 997C4S within my £50K budget.
£50K would put you in a nice 991.1C2, there are much cheaper ones but the cheap ones tend to be leggy and poverty spec.
£60K puts you into a 3.0T 991.2 but the driveability suffers, similar to the 718.

I think the 991.1CxS, last of the NA standard 911s is the one to go for if GT is your thing but prepare to spend £55K for a good one.
Otherwise a nice late 997CxS for nearer to £45K.

As for me, hoping for some better deals as we get closer to Xmas, or ignore my own advice and buy a Cayman GTS ( a 981 obviously not a 718 ).

Yes the Alpine is lovely car, I couldnt help spending some time looking in awe at the car on the stand at Le Mans

The point about the M2C is that you can, if you wish, slip it into auto mode and dawdle along in traffic. You can also drive it like a hooligan occasionally if that appeals, though I am guessing not. It is an astonishingly versatile car

Simply fit a rubber stop under the throttle pedal so you can’t get full power.

Not sure if same specs, but some US commentators etc
rate the normal M2 better than the comp
