Turbo trackrods onto early rack setup Questions

Post by Butty »

Got everything off under my 912 and the trackrod ends and the rubber buffers that screw into the rack are all shot , would it be better to replace the rods and buffers with a later turbo trackrod setup , so just rods boots and ends . Any pointers greatly appreciated . Image

Turbo tie rods are a good sensible upgrade. BUT if your car and steering rack are short wheel base then you will need the extended turbo tie rod kit as you will not get the length and sufficient threads in the rack for safety.

Check the date stamp on the rack

That’s a sub rack from the picture
Check out elephant racings website
Also check the condition of the rubber connector to the steering shaft

Yeah it's a swb rack , the rubbers are shot that's why I'm thinking of going the turbo tie rod route . Just getting some longer rods tomorrow then hopefully good to go .

I'm running the elephant racing turbo kit on my SWB, came with everything I needed. Lovely stuff.

You'll need Lemfoerder Tie Rods - anything else is just too short. The early racks are different but I've fitted these to my 65 and works well.

Rover 400 track rod ends give you the length you need

Yes they do, and a lot cheaper than buying from a Porsche specialist

I plan to refresh my steering this coming winter. From this thread do I conclude that turbo tie rods are not long enough for a 912? Regardless, out of interest, what are the advantages of turbo tie rods? Do they provide a benefit on a 912? Thanks.

The kit that all the main supplier sell will not fit an a swb steering rack safely. You need either to buy the swb kit or rover 400 rods and turbo ball joints and then make/source a spacer
