So, following on from my recent thread asking for comments on a 964 vs 993 model as a potential next Porsche, I've more or less decided that I'll (probably – ) go down the 964 route.

I'm hoping I might find a car which has already had money 'lavished' on it &, ideally has been mildly modified – my ultimate spec being some like this:



- although more likely my starting point will be a std LHD narrow-bodied C2 manual.

Prior to getting a 964 (I'll need to sell a couple of my other cars first) I'd like to start accumulating relevant parts if/when they crop up at reasonable prices.

Some of the mods/upgrades I was thinking of include:

KW or Billstein suspension

Alternative wheels (I particularly like the Eta Beta Krones or BBS)

RS lightweight flywheel

RS gear shift lever

Recaro fixed bucket seats (already have a few options)

Lightweight interior, etc

What else do people consider worthwhile modifications/upgrades ?

G-pipe ?

Heater blower by-pass & airbox inlet ?

What about the KW vs Bilstein set-ups – any preferences ?

On that subject I see that there seems to be 2 versions – one for models up to 1990 & another for 1990-on models. What's the difference ?

Any other worthwhile upgrades/mods ?

I'm aware of places like FVD in Germany but who else is a good supplier of new 964 tuning parts ?

Design 911 ?

.. suspension would 100% be the first thing to change, my car on stock stuff was awful . I did a lot of research & decided for me Bilstein were the way to go and I fitted pss10 which is matched coilovers & adjustable shocks . Good link here to the same ( although RS specific ) pss10s & walter .. I think these have renamed recently

Steve Rance on pistonheads has built a fantastic track focussed 964 with some fancy suspension on it .. i'll see if I can dig out the build thread

G pipe for sure. Or rear box delete. Not both, that makes it way too noisy. Hence I have a G pipe somewhere you could have that has about 20 miles use.

Drilling the air box is a surprisingly good mod for sound improvement.

Design 911 can get bits from FVD, easier than dealing with all the import stuff yourself.

An RS steering wheel really enhances the steering experience if you can find one. The common 968 Club Sport 3 spoker is a bit small and thick.

Don’t get RS geometry unless you’re Wally Rohl. But also don’t get C2 geometry unless you’re planning on going off roading. Take it to Centre Gravity or similar. If the car you get happens to have decent adjustables stick with them. The geo and condition makes much more difference than the brand in my experience.

ironically, mines set at rs spec and RS +5mm ride height . Shocks set to pretty soft as the roads up here are rough. I have a pair of spacers on the rear end too which currently suit my kind of fast road driving

G-pipe not worth it, rear silencer delete gains HP ( std ‘cup’ mod). Best reasonable exhaust mod is to delete the cat. If you like a challenge swap to 993 system, it does fit but exhaust manifold flanges need turning round and it’s dual outlets.
Drilled air box, small HP gain, nice noise.
Eco remap can work very well.
I had a set of Dymag wheels super light but hard to find these days, if you do fit 18” wheels fit the rack brace as per the turbo.

For me the mods would be in this order.

H&R anti roll bars
KWv3 Coil Overs
Lightweight Flywheel and clutch along with a custom chip from 911Chips (stops the tendency for cars with a LWF to stall at junctions)
Short shift kit
Cup Pipe (I prefer the sound to the G pipe)
Recaros (Andy you're a slim chap you could try the SPG )
RS Carpet set and door cards to save a bit of weight.

The above image obviously has fog light delete and cooling ducts, and a lower lip spoiler. I cannot see, but I suspect it has an RS middle rear bumper section too.

If you happened to buy one that has just had a clutch, there is a mod to adjust the clutch release lever so you can use a standard clutch pack with the shallower RS flywheel. My clutch was brand new, abs led up with a mileage stamped receipt at <500 miles, so spending another £700 on a replacement was a bit of a big pill. I can send you the part numbers if you find yourself in that position, they came to £200 odd so a decent saving.

I am also thinking about one of the Porsche period looking modern sat nav / blue tooth head units too, to add a bit of modern functionality with period looks. Oh, and his and hers cup holders from TP81, but that is obvious! RS door cards to match the carpet set. I have a grey dash which am not desperately keen on, so may flock it over the winter as I love the race inspired look.

Rear window to properly delete the wiper mechanism.

If you get a late car like mine and want to keep it legal (in case of a VOSA tug), D911 do a 100 cell cat for £350 odd. I got this for mine, obviously I am an eco warrior too so it was mandatory

All the other mods have been mentioned. Am doing about 75% of them up front, and the rest once I have some experience of it and decide what I want the car to do.

Most have been mentioned but Jons list above is what i would do also.

Maybe add a nice carbon front strut brace too which is cheap and drill the airbox. RS front ducts and teardrop mirrors if it is an early car. Wheels and tyre choice are important and a fast road set up .

Custom remap - my car made over 300bhp post the remap
Recaro seats and steering wheel
Instead of drilling the original air box, buy a used one and drill or cut away that. You can also buy pre cut / drilled air boxes.

PS - which of your cars are you selling?

With lhd cars it’s easier to find a car like mine that has no sunroof and no rear wiper ... a lot of the time they’ll have aircon too

Feroz, what other mods did you do apart from the remap to get 300bhp?

I went through the engine to make sure it was in good order, cup pipe and then a live remap with Wayne (Chipwizards). The car initially made 302 bhp maximum but we adjusted to get flatter torque curve and better power delivery and ended up with 296 bhp.

I should add it was a 964 RS so while the engine differences are relatively minor, the RS engines always seemed strong out of the box compared to regular 964s.
