992 ?

Post by Ignatzcatz »

Been looking at the 992 coupe and more recently the cabriolet version and apart from both being hit by the ugly stick big time, my mind keeps likening them to a Hot Wheels issue, it's those stupid great wheels that does it.

I think they look okay and modern, but that the Cayman and Boxster look better and make a lot more sense. The 718 Boxster to me is the best looker Porsche have produced.

I considered a 911 at the time but I’d have had to spend at least £40K more for a fraction of a second faster to sixty time, an almost doubling of fuel consumption, higher insurance and running costs and a car that doesn’t handle quite as well and is bigger.

I believe 80% of Porsche’s sales are Macans and Cayennes, that they sold about 7000 718s and 8,500 odd 911s. Sales of sports cars have been falling apparently.

I'm reserving judgment until I've seen one in real life. My local Porsche center doesn't have one yet, but they do have a 1:10 or thereabouts scale model in. And it looks quite smart. I like the front and side views. The back looks unfinished.

This is worth a (skim) watch:

Seems like they used the 930 as a visual inspiration for some of the curves and details.

Very compelling article in this month's Car magazine about the 992 :drunken:

Personally, I think it looks just fabulous (in their pictures). Bet it is huge, and feels it on a UK road.

Really though, I'm with Ashley as the 987/718 being so useable and the 718 is easily the smartest model made if you want a usable sports car to go anywhere.
Use the money saved to actually go anywhere! :)

Going to Race Retro this morning, saw a 991 '911' go from 20 mph to something very fast, what a performance, then hard on the brakes....

He arrived at the show 3 cars in front of me (in my Skoda)

Nowhere to stretch 400+ bhp, or 250 of my Boxster in the UK.

I want a 997.2 or a 718 (2.7) please, and the Euro Tours with the cash.

People buying new 992's I suspect care less about the fuel consumption or insurance costs.

I've owned 10+ boxsters and I love them but a 911 they are not....and 4 pots don't cut it in the sound department either.

Now a 981 Spyder..... 8)

I was considering both and settled on the 718 for the reasons given.

I don’t get that argument at all. Mid engine is better engineering and the four cylinder is so much more powerful and exciting than the old six. It was noisy and hard work. 3,100 rpm was eighty instead of 2000, it took for ever to wind up to speed or overtake and it droned at main road speeds.

There’s a well known experiment conducted by a couple of US universities on the Stamford Wine Society. Basically they wired up their brains to test equipment and then gave them different wines to try telling them only the cost. Basically what they were trying was the same $10 bottle, but sometimes they were told it was $90. The test equipment showed that they preferred the more expensive stuff before they’d tried it.

I’m with Jason, 987 yes, 718 no.

No more or less to it than 6 v 4.

Personal opinions may vary but a flat 6 defines the car and is the soul.

718 may handle better, be faster, more economical blah blah, but that’s not why cars move me.

‘Transport’ cars can have any engine (as long as it’s not diesel!), even electric, but toys need to push certain buttons.

Oh and I think the 992 looks great, and I love the Alpine with a 4cyl engine, so I’m a hypocrite

On my 987.2, the joy is the usable 2.9 engine, and its eager scream over 4000 rpm.
The second is its practicality, luggage space and touring comfort, 32 mpg and, when I'm solo, the fab dynamics.

The 987 I imagine is so well engineered to give the same with more pace, and it is a 911, full fat.
I imagine as I've never sat in one, let alone peddled one.
I could sell my 73T and the Boxster and get a Gen 2 997?

In comparison with the 718, my 987 was gutless and I found I was often having to scream it up through second and then wait for ever as it gathered speed in third. Overtaking in France, where there are faster roads, was a nail biting excercise. The 718 has 100lb/ft more of torque at 1950 rpm than my 987 did at 4,500rpm and it revs to 7,500. The result is quite explosive acceleration that isn’t possible with normally aspirated engines and less so with relatively small sixes.

Porsche had no option but to update the Boxster or in real world driving, it would have been outclassed. They knew traditionalists would make a fuss and idiot roadtesters set them off, but the 982 is for them and it comes in all their favourite iterations.

The 718 is more for people like me with more practical considerations and no interest in track days or whatever. Tbh I don’t understand the appeal because Rich has a customer with some old racing car that has a tuned Pinto engine and laps Castle Combe 10 seconds faster than his Audi RV10 and is cheaper to crash. I even had the silly Turbo S wheels removed for standard ones because they looked better.

I think the Boxster 718 is Porsche’s best looker too, as will women purchasers. It was the same for my 987, my neighbour is from Alderly Edge and it was her shopping car.

You lot won’t like it, but don’t knock because it’s every bit as good as the sensible road tests say.

I will knock it as we all have different opinions :). I don’t like 4 cylinder flat fours.
