DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

Matthew Cramp and I met up today to hatch plans to travel together to the International in Switzerland.

We’re planning to set off Wednesday morning 29th May, stay at a hotel halfway there Wednesday evening (and again Sunday evening) arriving back in the UK Monday evening.

If you’d like to join us in convoy, meeting in the UK or on the other side of the Channel, let me know.

Basically registration is now closed as they have 100 cars signed up, and paid. As I understand it, if you’d have fulfilled the criteria as listed, then if you were quick enough you’d have got in. I’m sure Phil will be along to verify this.

I’ve been to a number of Internationals, but we’re not going this year.

Yes, it’s all done and dusted
With so few places spaces got filled up really fast and there is a waiting list
Shame really as in previous years there were 150 plus cars.
I think there are probably only 10 or 11 cars travelling from the UK

Usually you just need a 356 and the willingness and funds to participate!
As long as you are quick enough, they are popular.

As Hendrik says , you just need to own a 356 and be quick off the mark to register as the most recent events have been space limited. If you are a member of the 'great n good' it may help you to know what is happening , however the best way to be noticed and to be notified is to get your car out there and join the various informal drives that take place in the UK .

The hosting 356 Club rotates for the Internationals , this year it is the Swiss , last year was UK , before that Spain , Denmark , Belgium etc.

I happen to be a member of PCGB , dont know whether that makes me one of the 'great n good' , where not much attention is paid to 356s but it got me into meeting up with other 356ers . I bought a car that had had a lot of previous going to the Internationals , so I have tried to keep that going to keep the car happy !!

I keep thinking about attending one but the price puts me off

The price is typically quite high as the choice of venues and the associated catering is always pretty high end
For me the convoy drive down with mates is all part of the fun , then arriving at a venue with up to 200 356s and the wonderfully curated drives by locals make this an un-missable event.

Next year,allegedly, the event will be in Munich. Likely to be large numbers for this one.

Yes indeed, you need to be quick most of the time as they almost always over subscribed.
Club membership only helps you get notified of where to look and book online as well as when they are open for bookings.

The journey there and back is always a pleasure and where else are you going to see so many 356s?

I have done quite a few of these (11 I think) so am more picky as to which ones I go to now.

2’990.00 chf for 2 people so lets call that 2300 gbp probably more once you use tourist rates

3 nights accommondation £750 get a pretty good room for 3 nights
Dinner x 3 3 x £120 = £360
Breakfast x 1 £20

Mind you it is Switzerland but the prices are pretty similar for all of them.

I'm see an event that is setup to make money for somebody not provide a good value meeting. There normally the most fun is had driving down with friends! Probably why my family say I'm a tight wad

Nobody's forcing you to attend Neil.
If we looked at any aspect of owning these cars from a purely accounting point of view, I doubt any of us would be doing it.
For me the experience of being at these (and other) meetings and driving the cars is far greater than any monetary cost.

Having read reports of the Internationals for years I've always wanted to go but have not yet been able to justify the cost.

I had a great window on the UK event last year by helping out with the marshalling and really enjoyed the experience - where else could you dine at Queen Elizabeth 1's childhood home, the American hanger at Duxford or see 3 Gmunds in one place? Jacky Ickx was a guest of the sponsors and came up to chat to me when I was parking up cars. Like Classic Le Mans I imagine the away fixtures are even more of an adventure.

They may not be affordable, but I didn't get the impression they were poor value for money

You only live once and you can't take it with you so, see you in Switzerland .
