Hi All,

Firstly I use my SC, having covered 32k miles since its first resto in 2014. First time around I accepted the inevitable stone chips. Four years later, it looked like it had done all those miles on a gravel rally stage.

I took it back to the painter who (to my amazement) said that the paint wasn’t right and should not be chipped so badly. The paint was also coming off when rubbed around certain trim items (eg the rear rubber bumperettes). I might add this is a well respected painter who has painted plenty of DDK cars. He agreed to repaint the car at his expense.

So, I saw the car today and it looks amazing again. Not many people get a second chance to decide on paint protection. What should I do and any experiences here?

I’ve had a car covered in PPF recently and also had a few cars ceramic coated. If stone chips are your main concern, forget ceramic or natural wax coatings as neither will prevent stone chips. They make car maintenance easier and look good. Ceramic coatings do help with bird lime, tree sap etc but nothing more aggressive.

I tried PPF mainly as an experiment and was quite impressed with it. Easy to maintain and very chip resistant. Someone opened a car door on to my front wing and marked the PPF quite badly and I poured hot water on it and it all but disappeared (self healing). It would have been a deep chip if directly on the paint. It wasn’t cheap though and you can see the joins in some places. I am also not sure how well it will age as it can lift in places and dirt accumulated along the edges. For the amount it costs, unless it is original paint etc, I would just drive it and repaint the affected areas when needed.

Had a local company make up some panels in clear film. Got them to do front bumper, trailing edge of front and rear arches, rear quarters, sills etc. You can't see it but will definitely deter stone chips..
