I thought I'd share my very reverend (holey) 2.7 targa restoration, I had the body shot blasted to reveal the true extent of work needed,oops

I managed to upload good images so will show my restoration

I do not do Facebook, too many welding critics!

It all looks great, so pleased to see another diy restoration and of a very high standard.

Especially impressed with the rear deck lid restoration, I have a rusty corner to tackle soon, the steel is so thin.
You must be close to doing the whole floor, wise move to replace the lot.
Is the base of the targa hoop ok?

I went to school in Stockland Green. not often people on here are in the Birmingham area.
Post image is a very simple and robust system to post on DDK.

Yes not too many real Brummies about these days, you're an Erdington lad then, I'm from Selly Oak!
Yes, 80% rebuilding of the deck lid was a challenge, wheeling the skin, didn't initially seem too difficult, but nothing is straight forward when you realise what is truly involved, but that's why I do it.
Yes the floor can go in now, but not until I've done every job in the cabin, leaving the floor out gives me better access at the moment..
The inside of the Targa hoop was knackered, I had to make a special tool for the inside profile to rebuild it, another first for me.

Went to school in Stockland Green as it was an Art School I went to, but bought up in Stechford!
Big place Birmingham.
Just looked at some of Barry's work on another thread, heaven help me.

This is one of the first parts I tackled

Started with a flat piece

After a lot of stretching, shrinking & shaping I got both halves tacked together

Then fully tig welded

Then trial fitted to body so I could scribe it before cutting out of rusty section

Then cut the body & welded in

As you can see from the above pictures, back seat this needed replacing.
I might add, I know a lot of these parts are available to buy at reasonable money, however the aim of this restoration is too improve my fabrication skills, not too spend my children's inheritance

Cut out a rough shape, with shaping approximations for curves



A lot of hammer work later, I'm getting somewhere



After a lot more shaping, smoothing & trimming, test fitting



And finally welded in & metal finished



There was about 12hrs work all in all on this piece.

Excellent Fab skills there Martin, wouldn't say you need to improve them; more like use them

More work on the rear seat area, first cut a big hole



Then fill it, there was a lot of reverse stretching in this part, btw the metal I use is called Zintec, it has a zinc coating, hence it's colour, this is just tacked in place at the mo



And welded up...



Now, the centre panel was very pitted(see above), best do that too, cut a blank



Give it some shape & tack it in..



All 3 repair panels blended in

More rust remedy..

Quite a challenging piece, made from 4 sections..
