DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

We were looking forward to going to the Cranleigh Lions classic car show which happened last Sunday as part of our little classic car club - Sadcase - (Storrington and district classic and sportscar enthusiasts). With the previous rain I was a little concerned over the possible state of the ground where the event is held but whatever had fallen had drained leaving the fields quite dry. Call me anal but the car is mint and I hate getting it all muddy. So we parked up next to a rather nice Mercedes then we saw a Vanden Plas Austin 1100 coming across the field. We thought he can go and park next to the Morris Minors, but oh no, he snucked up next to us. Well that brought the tone of our line down straight away. So we wandered off to the autojumble and actually found a Porsche book by Denis Jenkinson I had been after for ages and a fairly rare Tamiya 911 Turbo kit I wanted. Back to the car to have a snack and then we noticed all the people were giving the old 1100 the serious once over. You could hear stuff like "oh look it's an automatic, didn't make many of those," "I've always liked that wood veneer on the dash, very stylish," "Look at those leather seats," and "My Dad really lusted over one of these Vanden Plas editions."
No bugger even looked at my absolutely mint Super Sport except one small boy who took a pic with his 'phone then said to me "It's a turbo init?" when I informed the little lad, actually no, he dejectedly wandered off possibly trying to delete the picture from his 'phone.
We left soon afterwards and drove out to a local pub and got a similar response, "oh Porsche driver, don't look interested"
Well I really don't care, but I'm going on my monkey bike next time which is always good for a laugh, them and me!

You're a bit of an attention seeker!

To be fair I find the mundane stuff just as interesting as the exotica sometimes. Every car show big or small always has a splattering of Porsche, Jag or Ferrari. But then the polar opposite Austin Princess in the corner can be as interesting for different quirky reasons.

There was an Allegro at a local pub meet the other week. Crispy clean in Daz white, look closer and it was sitting on VW running gear with an aircooled 4 in the back.

One thing I don't find much interest in is RS/XR Fords, though I do like their Z cars.

This stuff we do isn't for the feint hearted you know! Notwithstanding that we get charged exorbitant prices for services, upgrades and spare parts, we suffer worse as we get looked at like we're a withered tit sometimes...…

But really they all love us

I find car shows very interesting, and like to see the mundane stuff that has survived, been restored, or just cherished.
Much more interesting than the flash Ferrari, Astons that pop and bang and wiz on start up, all a bit contrived to 'thrill'...I suppose.

I detest the road manners of others when in a modern Porsche, but they attract all racers with and without talent.
I find my pale yellow 73 911 attracts very little attention no matter what unless on a motorway at 70 ish and a Range Rover Sport hot shot sees me, then I'm in the cross hairs!

Love your story Ignatz. Do you still have a 356? You must find that gets a different response? I nearly always come away from car shows all talked out - people endlessly seem to want to talk about the 356.

you could have had a lot worse weekend - did you hear about the vw festival show? apparently a young woman was driving around the camping field driving while sitting on some guys lap, resulting in a crash into a customised vw caddy "painters and decorators van". i have limited info, only what i read on social media, but seems the organisers did nothing, the woman didn't want anything to do with it (neither did the owner of the audi she was driving) and the owner of the van was left rather miffed!
good on the guy - he still entered it into the show and shine on sunday with the front stoved-in! the real twist though - apparently the young woman in question won the show and shine with her modified scirocco..

Walking away from that crunch is not right?
If a race car crunches a stationary race car in the paddock at a hill climb, the errant driver is expected to make good, people are to be respectful even though on private ground.

Apparently no one wanted anything to do with it - I expect social media uproar at some point, especially as the young woman in question appears to be a bit of an insta-queen..

I fear that oft quoted stat that umptynine percent of all the Porsches ever built are still on the road is your enemy here.

I too would have been more interested in seeing the 1100 as that would probably be my only chance of ever doing so. I've seen a fair few SSE / Super Sports tho. Familiarity breeds contempt and all that.

The axle on the trailer I modified is from an Austin 1100.

Jeremy, the 356, which is undergoing repairs right now is a WHOLE different deal. I took a new Classic Porsche magazine to read at the Haslemere show and I didn't even get through Sueme's bit, and as for my previous MGB powered Morris Traveller I couldn't even get half a sandwich down my face. But I wasn't complaining.

Early 911s are very much yesterday's news, no wonder the general public can hardly stifle a Meh !

May I recommend a 356.

Sort out your 356 and you'll soon be the toast of any car show you fancy. Pull up at the pub and before you know it you're knee deep in classic car conversation whether you like it or not.

Fine looking women relax in your company, recognising you to be a man of taste and fine breeding stock. Offer them a ride and you will not be disappointed.

If Dale Carnegie drove a car, it was most probably a Porsche 356.

356 owners live a life others can only dream of.

So, to 'Win Friends and Influence People', you need a 356!
