DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

Looking through some old photos found a couple of father in law's 356.
He bought the car second hand in the early 1960s and couldn't afford the petrol to run it at the time! Luckily had a works van to get to work.
The registration was 3777 MX and it was a grey colour (old b/w photo but wife seems to remember it was grey)
I don't know my 356's but this one had overriders at the front, lamps under the bumper, chrome trim on the bonnet and chrome hub caps and RHD. Would that be a 356C?
Just curious to see if it is still around, doubt it though. Long gone to the scrapyard in the sky!

It’s tax was due 1st Jan ‘84 and it’s not on sorn so it may have gone

What an amazing coincidence !!!

I bought that car - a 1962 RHD 356B T6 1600S - in ~ 1991/92 (plus an A/H 100/4 in bits) somewhere 'up north' (I don't remember exactly where).

The bloke I bought it/them from had owned the 356 for several (I think 10+) years but had never driven it - instead he had been slowly accumulating a mass of NOS mechanical & electrical spares with a view to starting a complete restoration.

The cars (he also had 4/5 early 2CV's) were stored in some dilapidated council rented garages which were about to be demolished - hence forcing him to sell the cars.

Unfortunately the 356 was in a dreadful state - someone had covered the entire car with varying thicknesses of filler (a couple of inches thick in some places !) then brush-painted the car a lurid green - the final insult being to replace the rear teardrop lamps with a pair on Mini rear lights mounted horizontally ...







On stripping the paint/filler off, the story just got worse ... patches on patches, holes, rust, more rust, even more rust, etc





It might have been a different story today, but back in the early '90's it wasn't an economically viable proposition so I'm afraid I cut it up for spares ....

Thanks for that, coincidence indeed.
My wife reckons that her father could have only owned the car for a short period, like you, a serial car buyer!! Went on to MGBs, VWs, Karmann Ghias and other stuff.

Sad end, but as you say, in the day uneconomic to restore.

Well Andy I bet you were amazed with Keith's post. It makes me realize how lucky I am to still have mine. I saw bad rust in the 60's on 356 cars but that front nose takes the biscuit!!

Almost brought tears to my wife, her father would have been devastated if he had seen that.

OK Guys - So where do you all slot in to the Past Ownership

3777 MX Chassis number was 120 482 and as stated was a 1962 T6-B
Original Colour – Slate Grey with Red Interior

1st Owner - May 1962 - R. Chappell

Owner – April 1965 - Mr Perry

Owner – September 1968 - Damien John Marsh (He says that the previous owner (who ever that was ?) had, had it for 12 x years)


Even though itd long dead - it would be nice to lay it to rest

Mike - I* bought it in June 1991.

It was subsequently stripped down/cut up for spares in ~ Aug/Sept '91 with various parts bought by well-known members of the 356 'community' back then - including Bob Garretson, Barry Curtis, Tony Standen, Ritchie King, etc

Father in law would have had it around 1963/4 and not for that long - J W Hebson and he lived in Feniscowles just outside Blackburn towards Preston
