What have you got as a temp sender on your engine & where did you source it.

I know there is a plate underneath but I want to try to use the original dash gauge if possible so wanting to try that set up before splashing out on new vdo gauge.

The original dash gauge doesn't have a temperature gauge on it. The central console has a temperature gauge - that requires a specific sender - I can try and find the details later

This is the gauge that I have, temp on the top.

I'll read through the links a little later but hopefully I don't have to install an aftermarket vdo.

Anyone know if this set up works?

Going to order a taco plate from barnyard buses otherwise and set up an external vdo, don't want an external vdo if I can avoid it.

Does the boatyard buses taco played have a different thread to a standard 914 temp sender? If so I'd email I'd email Neil and ask him if he can make one with the correct thread - he's a helpful chap and his products are top class. I've got a tuna can sump extension, taco plate and carb filter holders from him.

No idea if the Machine 7 set up would work though

I ordeed a taco plate from neil in an m14 sensor size as this was was the most found generic sender.

I received the taco plate from neil at boatyard buses. Nice solid piece with m14x1.5 thread. I also ordered a sender from cool air. Having only just sorted the fuel pipes i'll get this plate installed this week and see if the sender/vdo works or if i can get the dash gauge to work i'll be much happier.

Just to let you know the original 914-4 temperature gauge in the centre console or dial cluster uses a 200° sender, while the aftermarket VDO gauges use a 150° sender.

The gauge works fine but as the sensor is only rated to 150 the needle only moves so far.

Part number 039 919 268 is the one listed in the catalogue but is no longer available.

I need a 200 degree sender with an m14 x 1.5 thread, preferably new.

Anyone know a source for supply?

Thoughts:

With a potentiometer and a ohmmeter, you could check the ohms needed to match the gauge.

VDO do list a 200C sensor with M14 thread but you’d need to check the length is okay and the resistance curve matches the gauge. Again, there might be a 200C M10 version, which would work if you replaced the thread with a smaller size (cut and weld on a suitable but).

I looked on their site but m14x1.5 200 is nla.

I have found 911 606 112 00 and hope it may work. Just waiting on spec info on it.

I picked up the above sensor today.

The threads are m14x1.5 & the shaft that goes into the engine is 20mm.

Does anyone know what the length of the original sensor is? Specifically the inner shaft to ensure it will not impact any internals.

This doesn’t answer your question but has some useful info (shortening the dipstick for example).
