Hi, can anyone advise me on the best / easiest way to find out if my car (1968 912) has matching engine and chassis numbers ?

Only way is from Porsche and getting a letter of authenticity. Should tell you chassis, engine and gearbox numbers

Or get the Kardex, for a somewhat higher cost, and generally more details. About the only way to find out engine & transmission numbers these days if you do not have the originals.

Does matching numbers not also relate to body panels? I.e. wings, doors, lids? I believe some were stamped with part of the chassis number during build once they had been fettled to a particular shell ?

It does, but after the 356, no one seems to care, engine only. You can find the last 3 numbers inside the doors.

Certificate of authenticity, or letter of origin, both available from porsche, and in the meantime the maestros engine truth tables! available in some of his books.

I have a 1968 Karman built 912. If yours was built by Karman here is what you will find.

Your Vin number will be under the lower dash kneed pad stamped into the metal dead centre . If you look under the shifter link inspection cover and vent - that's the grill on top of the transmission tunnel just in front of the rear seats - you will find a Number that is close to your Vin it will be a hundred numbers or so away from your actual Vin. This is the shell code, the last two numbers of this code will be stamped onto the inside of the doors, under the rear deck lid and under the bonnet. It may, but won't always be in the front wings inside the front light area. This number was used by Karman to match the parts prefitted to the car and then disassembled for paint. Once the car was finished, it was sent to Porsche where it entered there System and received a final VIN. Porsche built cars only have a Vin number and this is stamped on the tunnel and dash and the last few digits on the other panels. This info is only for 68, early cars had a different system and in 1969 a build code unrelated to the Vin was used. Hope this helps. There is a site that lists ranges of engine and transmission numbers for Vin numbers, you can get a feel from that if you engine and gearbox match. I can't recall it now.

Matching numbers is a slight misnomer. Here are my COA confirmed numbers:

Vin - 12804125
Engine - 1284042 type 616/39
Gearbox- 1283498 five speed type 902/2

As you can see the engine and gearbox numbers are part of a range of close numbers and don't 'match'.

Hi.
If your car is RHD and probably came in UK via AFN you could ask Mike Smith, on here, for a copy of the sales invoice/details.
He does this for RHD 356's I'm sure he can do it for 912s as well

I have 038 stamped on the inside of my doors on my Targa. It's a nice touch but as you say most only seem to care about the engine case/gearbox.

Depending on the year and model there are a multitude of numbers to match. The more that match the better your chances of getting top price.
It is those people that know about the details also tend to care more an pay more for the best examples.
