If its originally a UK car thats been exported , does that mean it won't be subject to VAT etc if imported back over here ?

No, I'm afraid not. (I asked the same question when I imported my 70 S from Brisbane, which is a UK car that spent most of its life in Australia).
On the bright side, seems extremely likely to me that this one would qualify for the "historic vehicle" (low) rate of import duty / VAT. Shipping is not expensive.

Looks a very well though-out car indeed. But I'm not sure what UK race series it would be eligible for?

HMRC import duty on a modified car would be 20% , and for the 'historic vehicle' rate of 5% you would have to state that the car is not modified . When you come to the DVLA to road register the car you will have to provide the same information as was supplied to HMRC . The DVLA sometimes ask to inspect the car , if on basis of inspection they decide it was modified it might be tricky . However it is unlikely that the inspector would be aware of what to specifically look for on this type/age of car .....beyond the obvious cage and race type mods......

That's not quite true, in my experience.
The historic vehicle declaration form asks you to list the modifications. It does not say that you can only have the lower rate if the answer is "none".
The 2 cars I have imported in the past couple of years both had mods, which I declared. I also said (which was true) that I intended to restore to original spec. In both cases HMRC decided to charge me the historic vehicle rate.
In this case the original engine is with the car. Seems likely to me it would be fine.

I imported my 914 and got the historic vehicle rate. You could say it was modified as it runs off batteries and has a forklift truck motor for an engine!
