looking at the parts list for bolts to fix wings to shell.

There are 20 hex head self tappers - ones with k stamped on the head - for the top rail of the wing to the inner wing.

and then 18 M6x12 (900.075.224.02) hex heads.

where do the hex heads go?

What car? pre '73 911, presumably your '72.

if so, there are 5 iirc of the same self tappers that locate the rear edge of the front wing to the 'flitch' panel in front of the A post on both sides, but you have the fuel tank, the heater box car cover panel support strips (4 bolts).
There are a few M6 bolts that locate the top of the wing by the wing mirrors to the scuttle of the shell, 3 per side I think.
Yes, I can see 18 scattered about the front inside assembly of the car, oh, and 4 to fasten the bonnet to it's hinges and the 3 for the bonnet latch lower and 2 for the top panel of the latch!

yes, for the 72.
Had i bothered to venture out into the rain and the garage last night, i would have noted:

1. 10 holes for the spire nuts across the top flange of the wing = 20 x spire nuts

2. 9 other miscellaneous holes for the wing ends and the wing closer = 18 x M6

So that answers my own question.

I now have another though. In the book, for the spire nuts, there is reference to a red fibre washer. Where does that go as there werent any on my car? Does it go between the metal washer and the inner wing or does it go between the outer wing and the inner wing?

Fibre washers: between metal washer and inner wing (to seal the hole).
Between inner and outer wings it's just the sealing calk.

As you doubtless know, in the factory most of the self-tappers ended up with paint on the heads because wings were attached before the luggage bay was painted. The exceptions are the ones that hold the carpet attachment points in place - they are yellow Zinc.

I looked at the 700 mile 911 photos and saw that the ones other than the stud holders were painted. Am assuming all the hex head will be painted also. Seems a shame given they are all nice and shiny yellow passivated right now. Same goes for the door bolts, all nice and shiny, soon to be painted ....

But at least i know they have the correct finish underneath!

My 73T coupe has the same bolts used on the wing closer panel as the wing top bolts with fibre washers positioned as stated above.
