Putting heating back into a car

Hi.
My 67s courrently doesnt have heating equipment as it was built for HSCC racing.

I was wondering what parts would I need to make the heating system work again? Would some kind soul be able to point me in the right direction and/or confirm or add to my thoughts below?

I think that the heating "channel" is still within the sills. My understaning is that there is a dedicated "tube" for this purpose rather than hot air simply travelling down the inside of the sill. When I look inside the heat "slider" on the inside sill of the car it appears that here is some sort of "criss-cross" tubing in there which i assume must be the hot air "channel".

Obviously I would need some sort of exhaust manifold with heat exchangers rather than my current "race" manifold

Flapper boxes - is the function of these simply to allow/block the hot air flow from the heat exchangers? Operated by cable from lever on the dashboard. Where does the cabling run for this? On the underside of the car? It must come up from under the hood somewhere so I guess the cabling goes along the underside of the car, into the hood area then back up to the dashboard controller.

If I can sort the above then I could at least have heat into the sill slider outputs into the cabin.I might well simply leave the installation there.

However, if I then wanted to get heat to the vents under the indscreen, what additional bits do I need? A blower box of some kind? Also how does the channeling of hot air to the screen work? Tubing by your feet and up to the vents somehow.

Any and all thoughts or experiences of doing this greatly appreciated.
Best
Will

The flapper boxes are operated by a lever directly in front of the gear lever.
You will need as a minumum:
Heat exchanger (Dansk)
Heater tubes x 2
flapper boxes x 2
Heater lever and cable (runs through tubes in tunnel)
Pipes from sill to screen demister x 2

Many thanks Nick. By "Heater Tubes", I take it you mean just the hi-temp hoses to link it all togerther?
cheers

As Nick says you'll need the heat exchangers connected via the flapper boxes (with flex heater hose) to the holes in the inner rear chassis leg, the (metal) heater tubes are in the inner sill - I would doubt if the have been removed, some get rusty and need replaced - see pic below showing heater tube - new ones are available. You'll also need the two plates with sliding covers on the inside where the oval hole is to allow hot air to enter the car. This plus all the hose tubes and cables/levers as Nick has mentioned. I'll be doing the same to my 67S over the winter.

Then to add there are other holes front of the A pillar at the sills which then take the hot air to the windscreen area - again connected with heater hoses.

Should have been "hose", from heat exchanger to flapper box

Hi Will,

Coincidentally, I am just embarking on a similar exercise (must be something to do with the weather!). Before starting, I put a borescope down through the sliding doors to check the existing heater tubes were ok and not rusting through. The 'criss-cross' tubing you can see is the inner mesh of the tubes, which, if in good order, retains an insulating jacket around the inner wall of the tube to prevent heat dissipation on it's path to the opening.

If you can get hold of a scope (or if you are near to me, welcome to check your tubes with mine) worth confirming if you need major sill surgery before going any further.

Regards,

Mike.

What's a heater?

Don’t forget the rear window demister tubes and connections.

I was under the impression that the heater tube construction with mesh inner etc. was to act as a silencer i.e. to reduce unwanted noise entering the cabin? I would have thought that that heat dissipation would not be significant as the heater tube is already enclosed between sill and other metalwork. I stand to be corrected if others know different?

Yes, true, good point, it will help silence manifold noise as well.

They also insulate the cabin from unwanted heat.

What is wrong with your current heating arrangements?

Tis for the young Keith and those people without fortitude. For you whipper snappers, out there, heaters in cars were an option on many cars into the early 1960's.

If you don't have to go the traditional route, there's always electric heating if you want to keep your race headers.

Just a thought :)
