Looking for a view on reasonableness.

I’m looking to have a paint shop do a respray on my silver 1972 coupe.

Glass out, bare metal, engine and trunk inside not included, door shuts yes.

No restoration or metal work needed. Straight car, virtually no dents or dings or much to do bashing wise.

Shop is saying 400 hrs, around £22k plus paint and other materials. Total estimate £25k. 400hrs seems way too much? Any thoughts

This one took 4 weeks - full re-paint from bare metal including detailed filler work, epoxy 2-pack, seam seal, primer, underbody schutz, interior, luggage area. engine bay etc. £8K with materials.

......and yes this is a blatant sales pitch.

We are just between Nuneaton and Hinckley if you want to have a look.

You need to clarify what you are being quoted for, are you giving them a fully assembled car and getting it back that way or are you giving them a stripped out car ready for the paint process, and reassembling yourself?

I’m giving them the complete car.

But it was painted a 5 years ago (badly) and everything comes apart easily

I was quoted 5K for labour, 1K for materials to paint my 73 coupe in a solid colour. I stripped the car of glass, stripped interior, lights etc.
They would flat the car, fix the door gaps (smear the whole exterior surface with filler, sand it all back) and small details, no welding required.

Give it back to me externally painted for me to build back up. Quoted this March 2017.

I did not take the re-paint due to pending IVA issues and my car.

I’m living in Toronto. Moved here 6 months ago. This was a specialist garage.

I’m going to live with the rather poorly painted car and wait till I get back to UK in a few years and then get it painted. Long live UK craftsmen and women

Maybe so, without wanting to appear to defend them, the strip and refit takes time, which you are obviously being quoted for... i reckon its a weeks work in that alone ie. 40 -50 hours which you could save by DIY.

A good paint job is as quoted in earlier posts IMO

Looks very nice - 4weeks = 160 hours which is about right for a bare shell
