I am thinking of buying a 10 tonne press for the new bearings I need to replace in the E Type

Being a bit of a thrift bugger I don't really want to spend a fortune...is 10 tons enough ?... and are there good economical ones on the market......or does anyone have a second hand one they would like to sell

Got mine from Machine Mart during one of their offer periods. Don't know what I did without it, been so useful.

I bought a second hand one 15 years ago for £30, still going strong.

ebay.. you might get lucky and find a second hand one, but regardless the new ones are not hugely expensive anymore and they're very useful. 10ton seems to be the sweet spot, 12ton ones are a step up price-wise (and I'm not convinced they're all 12 ton anyway )

keep some budget for some pressy-things (metal discs) for pushing things out, and some of the metal X's for putting underneath - sometimes you can find a deal for an extra 10-20 quid that includes these things (no idea what the correct terms are for them) which works out as a good deal vs. buying separately

one other thing - if you can find one with a pressure gauge, its quite a useful thing to have - not a deal breaker in my opinion though

Hymmmm...10 tonnes at Machine Mart is £200 plus.....
6 tonnes I can find for £60.....

I need to install wheel bearings, fulcrum shaft bearings and bearings in the rear trailing arms....

No need to use it for any disassembly work....that's all done.....

Will 6 be enough..?

The type that look like a "bottle jack in frame" are cheaper but I'm not sure how well that works. There is a 12T with ram, remote actuator & gauge for £180 on eBay. Will be "hobby quality" however. Not a patch on a 2nd hand workshop machine with a fresh set of seals but those are harder to find obviously.

The bottle jack on a frame ones work fine - I regularly use a friends 10t one (might be 8, I’d have to check now as the prices have got me thinking!)

Was that from scratch Mark...or upgraded an existing one with a more powerful press..?

It was from scratch.
I started with this as a set of plans
