1983 SC Fog Lamp Switch Knob Question

Hello Everyone:

First time poster here.

I live in Calgary, Canada, and have an 83 SC Coupe that was purchased by me in North Vancouver, but originally came through the AMAG dealership in Schinznach-Bad Switzerland. The car is in mint shape all round, and came with the small rear red lens fog lamp, but did not come with the front valence factory mounted Bosch fogs that were common to these cars between 74 and 83.

I have the CoA, and the fronts were never installed on this car, as an option or otherwise, from new.

Now, I'd like to source and install some fronts with yellow lenses. I think it would look good! Currently, there is a "one pull" (rear only) factory installed dash mounted knob/ switch that controls the rear fog. Again, common to these cars I think.

I have a couple of questions (below) that I can't seem to get clarification on here in western Canada - and I don't know of anyone locally that has both the front/ rear fogs on a Euro spec car like mine. So, I thought I'd ask you European based folks if you could help:

- Will the currently installed dash knob/ switch work to activate both the front and rear fogs (once installed and wired), and will it accommodate the wiring/ hook up necessary for both the front and back fogs to work when installed?

- Do I need an additional dash switch/ knob for the fronts, as well as retaining the rear switch, or is there such a thing as a "two pull" position (front - rear) knob available to control both front and back? I'd really like to avoid having to install another "one pull" switch/ knob in the dash if possible

- Could I turn the front and rears on/ off separately, and, if so, how would that happen? Currently, the rear fog only turns on when the car's headlights/ tail lights are on.

- Could I run only the fronts - without the headlights and the rear fog being on and, if so, how?

To conclude, if anyone has a set of the original Bosch lamps (in mint shape) that are for this car, along with the wring and mounting brackets for the front - please let me know at stenv@telus.net.

Hi Steve, my 78 Sc has front and rear fogs one OEM switch operates both front and rear fogs. Pull to operate rear or turn clockwise to turn on the front. It might be worth seeing if you can twist your switch to see if it turns. If yes you can use the one switch to operate both sets of fogs. Alternatively source a switch that has this functionality.

Ps yes yellow fogs look cool. You can still buy the yellow lenses separately if you source a set that has clear ones.

The fog switch only pulls out (for the rear light), and doesn't turn clockwise to the right (which, as you say, would activate the fronts).

So, I think the one I have is a single function switch for either the rear, or fronts, but not both together - or separate.

Are the 2 position switches difficult to source?

But, hang on, I was just in the garage - and here's something strange. The rear defrost switch pulls out one position - and also turns to the right - clockwise - and it seems both actions activate the defrost - either pull, or turn - which seems unnecessary to me!

Assuming that both the fog and rear lamp switches do the same thing (simply turn a system on/off), I wonder if the 2 switches are mixed up, and I actually do have a 2 position switch which is running the rear defrost, not the fog lamp?

I suppose the only way to tell is when I source the actual lamps and install them.

The switches are not mixed up, the rear demister is two stage.

You could source a second demister switch and change the emblem for the fog light.

Hi Steve, my demister pulls out two clicks as Jonny says it's a two stage demister. My fogs pull out one click and turn to the right. Could it be that someone swapped your switches around at some point. Or you could use the demist for the fogs as it seems to operate the way my fog switch does ! Just swap the plastic emblems over...

I think the switches could be hard to source none on eBay in the U.K.

My 82 SC demister switch is pull and turn. My fog is pull one stop (no front fogs on mine)

You'll also need a harness for your car of course - I fitted front fogs to my SC and used these guys. If you haven't got a harness, suggest having a look at them - really good service, great product and it fitted perfectly. I don't have rear fogs, so only needed the one stage switch.

It is possible that the wiring for front fogs is already there but just not being used...I think the same looms were put into all European SCs.

Certainly my '78 has a lot of unused wiring in the lights sections of the loom and I have no fogs or switch.

Have to say I don't think I used my front fogs in the 10 years I ran my first SC but that's not the point of this thread!

Porsche use a relay for the front fog lamps on an SC's. Could well be already wired up for it.

If you're putting a fog light switch in, you'll likely need the harness from the switch to the fuse box. There may we'll be wiring from there to the fogs. The kroon harness goes from the switch to the fuse board.
