Hello All,

I'm in the last stages of finishing off my rebuild (piccies will be on a separate post when I get round to it), but have an issue which is doing my head in.

The steering is all over the place in the context of when I take my foot of the gas and when I change gear the steering goes really light and very none descript. I have jacked up the front and can't see any issues with bushings or any of the suspension.

Any ideas, could it be anything to do with the rack? Strut mounts and bushings all look good.

Have you checked your 4 wheel alignment?

From your description (providing everythings good up front) it seems that the steering is "improved" when you're driving the rear wheels, and wishy washy when coasting or not underload.
I had this once and it was a rear arm bush.
Under load it pulled into position, coasting, it wandered.

I also had a similar set of symptoms from the 3 rear trailing arm bolts working loose on one side over time. It was behaving very strangely when competing, and we found the whole assembly to be sliding in the bolts on one side (effectively the same as a severely warn trailing arm bush)

It also caused a feeling of clutch judder when pulling away, as under load the suspension on one side developed full toe out.....

I agree with Darren, the problem could well be at the rear where you first instinct would be the front.

Oh, and the bolts are marked now to prevent such amateur occurrences!!!

Also check the inner rear suspension consoles. The right one in particular is known to rot away due to battery acid.
