SWB Door check straps

As I work down the minor issues list with my '66 912 one of the things that isn't quite right is the door stay checks on the car.
I have the original door stays, but the detent function doesn't appear to work. The doors open all the way out with little resistance.
Does anyone know if the door stays can be refreshed or is it a case of once worn out I need new ones?
Am I also right in thinking that the only ones that will fit are the 65-68 ones and not the later ones?
Later ones seem much cheaper than the SWB ones - hence the question.
As always any advice is much welcome.
